Upcoming Book Launch and History Talk in Hill End (NSW), Saturday 30th April 2022
About the Book:
Bew Chip was a resident of the Hill End and Tambaroora district for 72 years. Between 1865 and 1890, Bew Chip kept a record of gold he sent back to China, initially carried by returning countrymen, and later sent through Chinese firms with branches in Sydney and Shekki, near Canton.
Bew Chip’s register is unique as the only Chinese-language gold miner’s register we know to have survived from the gold-rush era. This annotated translation of Bew Chip’s register by historical linguist Ely Finch, with a historical background by Dr Juanita Kwok, is a rare source of the identities of some of the district’s Chinese mining population, and on clan networks and early firms carrying on a remittance trade between Sydney, Hong Kong and China.
The book can be ordered from the publisher—the Hill End & Tambaroora Gathering Group Inc.—by email (sales@heatgg.org.au), telephone (0408 117 784 or 0423 962 511 within Australia), or via the publisher’s website.
